Just wondering - since level 5+ AI on defenders cause them to join in attacks, whilst also making defensive clearances - how does this differ from the behaviour of a midfielder (never owned one before)? Presumably the midfielder is more accurate with its passes? Which means it will require higher acceleration stats?

A Midfielder goes more forward than Defenders. I'd say all 3 attributes are just as important as eachother for a midfielder.
I'm planning on changing my Midfielder to a Kicker in the future however, because it isn't gaining XP quickly and it isn't that useful for me.

defenders and midfielders are both fantastic choices in a team. you should never leave home without at least 1 of them. All through 500-700nwl points i ran both a def and a midfield.
the main advantages for the defender high level AIs are that they are very aggressive (much like the higher gk AIs), coming forward to deflect shots and generally aid in the heave-ho pushing games that sometimes happen in the midfield area. They take goal line positions when the gk is busy. Only issue is that because they come forward to assist, unless you have good speed/accel stat, they sometimes come forward and then are unable to get back in position near the goal fast enough.
the midfield AI is also fantastic, it aids in the defence, sitting on the goalline if necessary, and sweeps out shots. It is involved everywhere. it will follow and set up shots right on the enemy goal, and push all day in any pushing match anywhere on the field. It scores goals often enough too i found. The real issue here is because the midfielder bot is so damn good and is literally everywhere all the time, it burns through batteries very very quickly. Overall i find the midfielder AI very impressive and would always consider it, but not enough to rely on as a defender on its own.
the solid backbone that i used for a very long time was a gk/def/mid and then 2 offensive choices of your own (kicker striker/2 strikers/striker winger/2 wingers etc)(i used gk/def/mid/winger/striker for a looooong time)
so yeah, highly recommend both, not necessarily in same team even, but never leave home without at least one of them. from my experience, i would recommend the gk/def backline, and decide if you want a midfielder or not. Its a good choice, but there are others as well, depending on your own team set up and what you want.
one final note: like bradders said, midfielders and defenders gain experience VERY slowly, because they dont get many of the xp gaining stats that count (goals and stopped shots, instead they have hundreds of passes and intercepts that arent worth any xp)

For The Neurotics I had decided on defender, 2 wingers, striker. But I often find myself against 4 attacking bots while I'm only attacking with 3. So I have half a mind to revert to midfielder instead of defender. But yeah, when my defender started going forward I sold my midfielder bot. Mind you I also decided to have only 5 bots in a team. Dethklok also uses a defender and no midfielder so same issue there, although I have them on auto play for a few days now so I'm not too bothered.

As Vertigo said the midfield is fantastic, except for the corners in defense.
They cost a lot and need a high Chipset, maybe wait a little before buying some.
Better than a defender 6 in attack (because the defender is doing the same thing than a striker : follow the ball) but less good that it in defense, except against BrBa
Antoher thing : the midfield is very different from the utilitary, yes you can put both everywhere, but the ulitary is blocked in its affected zone, and do not defend properly

Example of Midfield defense vs a BrBA : only one goal scored by it ! www.neuronball.com/fr/game/525906/Middle Way has 4 midfield to test them, it was working so well than i keep the team, like that with 2 lateral midfield, but it is possible with 4 midfield, but because the mid needs a big chipset, (or maybe choose optical), it is quickly exhausted = less matches

Just put 4 strikers or wingers at the goal in a line, and in the middle sits the goalkeeper, and you'll see the magic.

Although Midfielder may attack more aggressively, I find that midfielders don't seem to act as a team with other good scorers. Defenders on the other hand DO attack if they are in the front 2 positions of the court, and will definitely score better than a midfielder (I use toughs). Midfielders would be good though if your neurons are toward the back and you want them to attack. An example of 3 defender toughs, 1 angry kicker, and goalkeeper: www.neuronball.com/en/game/4602646/
