Approaching some very experienced bots and a good number of games under my belt i want to know what other people think of the AIs.
From my experience Strikers are always extremely good, ive been running at least one since the beginning of the game
Kickers are good once you start using Br-Ba batteries but are sometimes quite over rated in early levels and mid levels (some people swear by them but i havent had that much success with them)
Defender is a must, never leave home without one (almost doesnt matter which one you have, just have one) The defender AIs steadily get more aggressive like the Goalkeeper AIs. Eventually towards lvl 5 and up the defender starts scoring goals half the time
Goalkeepers are a big point of contention. Some people think you should upgrade them as soon as possible, some people think that you should never go past GK AI lvl 3. The difference is is that past gk lvl 3, the gk starts to leave the goal to sweep shots and sometimes leaves the goal open to attack. People think this behaviour is bad and sometimes it is depending on what bot you have. For instance, if your goalkeeper is really slow, having him leave goal will not give him any time to return to the goal to stop a shot, making the AI look bad. However, if your GK is really fast, it will make him look like a god. Make up your own mind. GK lvl 3 is the last level of GK which never leaves his line. It also makes him vulnerable to diagonal shots so again, up to you.
Midfielders are extremely strong. All through around 500-600nwl point games i use one. They score goals, they defend very well, and are generally everywhere. Very solid choice at any level. One thing to notice is because they move around a lot and help so much they use batteries very very fast, so watch out for that.
Wingers are also extremely impressive. There was one time when i nearly replaced my only striker with a second winger i was so impressed. Was running a goal/def/mid/winger/striker at this time. They position themselves away from the ball in front of the goal to poach shots. They also dont get involved as much in the stupid 4 ball vs 4 ball pushing matches that happen and instead try to intercept where the ball is going.
I have no experience with the high level utility AIs
